Our Goals and Team Mission

The Port City Thunder-Stevens 12u program is designed with one primary goal in mind, to teach the fundamentals of the game of softball. The mission of the coaching staff is to help their ladies continue to develop their passion for the game through fun drills coupled with hard work and loving support. Coaching Staff & Players

Parker Stevens - Head Coach

Parker is a graduate of UNCW with a major in Communications and a minor in Leadership Studies. While at UNCW Parker played Rugby (95-97) and Club Baseball (97-99). Following college, Parker worked as a teacher at East Chapel Hill High School and was an assistant football coach and the head JV baseball coach. While living in Chapel Hill he also worked during the summers as the Facility Manager for the Durham Dragons, a member of the Women’s Professional Softball League. After marrying his wife Susanna in 2002, they returned to Wilmington and Parker resumed his call to coaching at Topsail High School. In 2018, Parker retired as a player with the Wilmington Rangers (NC) and the Dundalk Nationals (MD) and plans to stay connected with the sport through teaching and coaching within the Thunder Organization. Parker is also an Assistant Softball Coach at Laney High School. Professionally, Parker is a contract insurance examiner serving various state and federal agencies. He recently graduated from Liberty University with a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling and helps serve his church with congregational care needs. Parker and Susanna have 2 girls, Isabella and Juliana, both of which share their passion for the game of softball.
Susanna Stevens

Susanna Stevens - Assistant Head Coach

Susanna attended Quince Orchard High School (MD) where she was a four year starter on their softball and field hockey teams. While at Quince Orchard she was selected to the All-Conference teams and received numerous school awards. Susanna was recruited to play softball at UNCW. While at UNCW she was a four year starter on the softball team and was their Captain for two of those years. She also received their Silver Bat Award and was twice selected to the Big South All-Conference team. Susanna had a .308 career batting average and upon her graduation from UNCW held six school records. (Career Record: Double. Single Season Records:  At-Bats, Runs Scored, Hits, Total Bases, and On-Base Percentage.) She graduated UNCW with a degree in English.  After college Susanna lived briefly in Maryland before returning to Wilmington with her husband Parker. Professionally, Susanna is a contract insurance examiner for various state departments of insurance. Susanna enjoys most all sports, horseback riding, volunteering at church and spending time with her friends and family. Susanna and Parker have two girls, Isabella and Juliana, along with their two dogs Bear, and Coal.

Bradley Rhodes - Assistant Coach

Coach Rhodes is a Wilmington native, attending both Laney HS and UNCW. His coaching career started at the age of 16 when he volunteered as a coach with Cape Fear Optimist Club. In the fall of 2005, the school system came calling and Coach Rhodes was named the Head Coach at Williston MS. In 2007, he moved to Trask MS where still serves at their head coach. In 13 seasons the bears have won 10 county championships going undefeated 6 times and having only 1 loss in 4 other seasons. At this point, Coach Rhodes has a middle school head coaching record of 159 wins and 27 defeats in 15 seasons. 144 of those wins coming at Trask Middle School.   In the spring of 2006 Coach Rhodes began coaching at the high school level as the junior varsity coach at New Hanover High School where he served for 2 seasons. In the spring of 2008 Coach Rhodes moved to Laney High School as the varsity asst coach. He served in this role as assistant coach for 9 seasons from 2008-2016. In 9 seasons as assistant coach the Bucs made the playoffs every season winning the conference 4 times and compiled a record of 155 wins and 58 losses. In the fall of 2016, Coach Rhodes was named Head Softball Coach at Laney High School. Coach Rhodes is currently still serves as the head coach at Laney entering his 4th season in that position in 2020. In his first 3 seasons the Bucs have made the playoffs every season. Compiling an overall record of 49 wins and 19 losses. In his 12 combined seasons at Laney going into the 2020 season 21 former players have gone on to play at the college level. Coach Rhodes has also coached travel ball from time to time since 2004. He assisted in coaching the Coastal Bigstix organization from 2004-2009 and again in 2013. Coach Rhodes has served an advisor and off and on assistant with the Port City Thunder since 2014. He has had 3 daughters play in the thunder family in this time frame with 2 still playing while the oldest is playing in college.   Coach Rhodes has a great love for the game of fastpitch. More than that love is his love for his family and for our Lord Jesus Christ. He and his wife April have 7 kids, 2 pigs and a bunch of chickens.
